Humor from my "quiet-time"
The past couple of weeks I received copies of Preaching journal in the mail. Thanks, I guess, to the good people at preaching.com, I don't think I ordered it or paid for it, but like music on the internet, I read it when it shows up in my mailbox. In April I am speaking at an event with them so that may be why they have graciously sent it to me.
Anyway, it is nice publication for those of us who are into caring about the state of preaching in the world today.
Well, I have this little room in my house where I go to have some alone time, and the amount of time I spend in this little room is just perfect to flip through a magazine or read an article. So today after receiving my free Preaching journal I brought it in with me and ran across two cartoons that made me laugh out loud. Which is not such a great thing, you see to be laughing out loud from my private room when my kids have friends over makes the departure from the room of particular concern.
So, here are the two cartoons, both of which I think go well with the Preaching Re-Imagined book so I will post them on that blog as well.
I am not sure why the images don't show up in the thumbnail, but you can click on them to them.

There's a famous story in the a cappella Churches of Christ. N.B. Hardeman was an incredibly popular preacher, evidently quite good (I've never actually read any of his stuff, sorry.) Over the last two decades of his career, his sermons were published in books ("The Tabernacle Sermons," five volumes, still in print) and denominational magazines, etc.
Anyway: Hardemann was speaking at a national conference, one of a trio of preachers who were supposed to bring the whole thing to a climax. And the preacher who immediately preceded Hardemann to the pulpit LIFTED one of Hardemann's Tabernacle Sermons verbatim. And Hardemann, in front of thousands of people at this national conference, called the guy out on it.
(At least, that's the story as it was told to me.)

Though a laugh emanating from your "private room" may be a bit odd, I would have to say there are much more problematic, or at least worrisome, or embarrassing, sounds that could come from there. Perhaps you could use another little room that is more secluded.

Definately merrited an out loud laugh, regardless of who heard.
